Museum Needs & Wishes List

[Most recent update: November 21, 2010]

If you are interested in donating items to the Douglas County Museum or wish to volunteer your time, here is a list of current and long-term needs.

Museum Operations

  • Full board of trustees needed. Officers needed. Minutes need taken. Constitution and By-laws need followed.
  • Dependable help needed to break down and set up tables.
  • Museum needs to be open not less than 6 days a week and preferably 7 days. If not full time, it should be open 3 full days and 3-4 half days. Having volunteers to keep it open more than 3 days a week will not likely work.
  • We need an educational program every other month and a musical program on the other month—with other programs and events in between.
  • Increased attendance at fund-raisers is needed.
  • We need more volunteers to do physical and non-physical labor.
  • We need new members, young members, active members who participate.
  • Public outreach to the grade/high schools needed, including use of the two traveling programs to the schools. Outreach to libraries.

One Shot Purchases

  • Our heavy tables need to be replaced by lightweight white tables.  They cost about $80 each.
  • Another exit door needs to be added to the south wall of the exhibit area in order to dramatically increase legal occupancy capacity.
  • We need some good, sturdy ladders.
  • Archival boxes for the collection are urgently needed.
  • Padded hangers and cloth clothing protectors needed urgently. Sturdier clothing racks are needed.
  • Some type of structure needed to store large framed and unframed pictures upright.
  • In the near future, we will need a new copy machine.
  • It would be nice to have red-colored cloth napkins for holiday dinners and veteran celebrations.
  • We need 25 more china plates, cups and saucers that match what we already have in the kitchen.
  • We need several new, heavy-duty mops.
  • We need new metal sink stoppers in the kitchen sinks.
  • We could use improvements to the PA system, such as remote microphones and microphones that can be used simultaneously.
  • We need First Aid supplies.
  • We need a never-ending supply of copy paper (white and pastel), labels, security envelopes, good scissors, staplers, staples, construction paper, scotch tape, two-sided tape (lots of it), printer cartridges, large mailing envelopes, pens and pencils, magic markers, etc.
  • Replace all of the thin drinking glasses that we currently use with some that are thicker and less likely to break and cause injury.
  • We need kitchen serving carts and more bus tubs.
  • We need a big supply of Par 38 and Par 30 lights.
  • We need more and better telephones.
  • A new wheelchair for handicapped visitors would be great.
  • Supplies needed for the Year 2011 garage sale include: IGA-type brown bags, labels, felt pens, rubber bands, scotch and masking tape, plastic bread bags, string tags, safety pins.
  • We could use a third refrigerator.  We could also use a second stove.  This would require some food service sanitation compliance.

Maintenance/Custodial

  • We have the track lights, but we don’t have the track for added lighting over the exhibit area.
  • The lights above the center of the triple showcase need new track lighting because the current lights cast a shadow at the top of the case and they are outdated and some are damaged.
  • Eight-foot lights in the hallway need replaced with 2 by 2 lights.
  • At least one row of the fluorescent lights doesn’t come on. Some of the dimmer switches on the recessed lights need replaced.
  • Front office needs a change in lighting. The old eight-foot lights need to be replaced with 2 x 4 drop-ins.
  • A pipe under the kitchen sink needs repaired.
  • About half of the ceiling panels were replaced with new panels following the water damage. The other half needs replaced because they are yellowed compared to the new ones.
  • There are eight-foot lights inside our four-foot showcases down the hallway. When a light bulb needs changed, we have to pull an entire section or sections off the showcase.
  • Wheels on some of the moveable showcases are too lightweight to hold the weight of the cases. They need replaced.
  • We need one specific area for hammers, nails, pliers, scrapers, paintbrushes, rollers, etc. The “shop” area of the museum needs some serious reorganization.
  • Track lighting is needed in the lobby.
  • The exhibit floor and hallways of the museum could use a professional cleaning and wax job.
  • More shelving is needed in the kitchen. We need improved shelving in the kitchen pantry.
  • The room for mannequins needs improvement (shelving, rearranged, etc.).
  • We need an improved Archives Room off of the main library (shelving, lights, organization).
  • The linotype machine needs to be moved to the warehouse but wherever it goes, there it needs to stay. Some means to store the exhibit platforms when they are not in use.
  • We could use more small, medium and large rolling Plexiglas showcases.

Capital Improvements

  • The front door entrance needs to be completely redone—for both aesthetic and temperature-controlled purposes.
  • The entrance at the northwest side of the museum needs to be repaired to stop water from coming in. The crash bar needs to be reactivated.
  • The exterior of the museum building needs to look less like an old food-liner.
  • New ceiling needed in the accessioning room, and needs air conditioned/heated.
  • New stairs needed for the loading dock if we plan to use it. The loading dock could be remodeled for better use.
  • The water fountain needs replaced because the refrigeration went out on the one we have.
  • The loading dock needs to be either remodeled or removed.
  • Front office needs remodeled. Back office needs remodeled.
  • Floor tile needs replaced. The first layer of floor tile is asbestos.
  • The parking lot needs to be resurfaced.
  • New electrical fixtures would be an asset to the Collector’s Corner, although the current ones work. The ballast has already been replaced twice. The fixtures are difficult to work with.
  • We have air coming underneath the overhead door on the west side of the building. It would be good to put another door at the entrance to the shop area in back.
  • The exterior needs painted on the south and west walls.
  • The Progress truck needs to be repaired so it can actually be driven and used in area parades to promote the existence of the museum.
  • The museum’s warehouse needs lots of work, including:
    • Conduit, wiring, lighting, outlets in both the front and back
    • Replacement door at the southwest side of the building
    • Proper exit signs in the back part
    • Northwest window replaced
    • Smoothing of rough patches on the floor
    • Open spaces between roof and ceiling need sealed throughout the building.
    • Need a new overhead door in the back. The current one is hard to open and close.
    • Double aluminum doors at the southeast need repaired.
    • North interior walls could use a wire brushing and coat of light colored paint.
    • The TY tower guts need moved from the north end of the room from the south end of the room to make space for more garage sale tables.
    • A very tall vent pipe needs to be removed.
