Genealogy/Local History Reference Books

Douglas County branched off from Coles County in 1859. The territory that is now Douglas County was originally known as Upper Okaw and New Albany precincts in Coles County court and county clerk records. The records kept from that early time period can be located in the courthouse in Charleston, Illinois.

Among the genealogical/reference materials found in the museum's library that might be of value to researchers and genealogists are the following:

Last update: 07/14/08
  • 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 census books

  • Probate index- used to find file numbers for wills, estates, insanity/conservator, delinquents, etc. (file number can be taken to the circuit clerk’s office to find estate papers.) Please note: Although this index is in alphabetical order, sometimes you can find things like- Brown coming before Baker, etc.) This index goes from 1859 until 1963.

  • Our First Five Years. Index of volumes 1-6 of the Douglas County Genealogical Society’s newsletters, Trails and Traces. The index shows three numbers (example; 1-3-18). The first number is the volume or year. The second number is the issue number within that volume. The third number is the page number the name can be found on. The museum has all volumes of Trails and Traces.

  • All Douglas County cemetery books. Note: The inscriptions found in these books are from existing tombstones. It is possible that someone’s ancestor is buried in Douglas County, but no tombstone for that person exists. Cemetery books available: Tuscola; Arcola; Arthur; Fairfield; Campbell-Chesterville-Fillmore-Bourbon-Lower Lester-Miller-Yoder-Sunnyside; Cartwright-Lewis-Nelson-Mt. Zion (Lewis is also known as Hickory Wyeth.); Albin-Gwinn-Pleasant Grove-Broadus; Oak Ridge (Camargo); Van Voorhis-Deer Creek- Murdock-Gill-Hugo-Fairland-Jordan; Villa Grove-Hammet; Newman-Pleasant Ridge.

  • Also: Cemetery Inscriptions, Douglas County, Volume 1 - Taylor-Upper and Lower Lester-Ev. Zion cemeteries. Also: Amish and Mennonite Cemeteries of Moultrie and Douglas County.

  • Also: Supplement (additions and corrections to all cemeteries listed above through the year 1982, with the exception of Cemetery Inscriptions, Do. Co., Volume 1).

  • Surname index to Douglas County cemeteries. This is especially good to use if what cemetery an ancestor is buried in is unknown. It is especially effective to use this book if the name is uncommon. It is more difficult and time-consuming (but not impossible to use) if the name is common like Smith or Jones. The surnames are listed by township but there can be more than one cemetery in a township. The first page of the book shows what cemeteries are found in each Douglas County township.

  • 1876, 1884, 1900, 1910 history books of Douglas County.

  • Indexes to each of the county history books.

  • Naturalization index. This book lists citizens who were naturalized in Douglas County, usually the country they were from, and the U.S. citizen who sponsored them. This book is so thin it is sometimes hard to find it on our shelf.

  • Obituary listings (1901-1925) in the Arcolian newspaper. Tells name of deceased and in what issue of the Arcolian that name appears. Names from 1913 issues are not included. The museum does not have the Arcola newspapers. Check the Arcola library instead.

  • Nostalgic Newman News. Especially good to find Newman area births, deaths, marriages. This thick book has two indexes (one about in the middle). Both indexes have separate birth, death, and marriage sections.

  • City Directory of Tuscola 1894. Not indexed, but one section does have an alphabetized listing of the people who lived in Tuscola in 1894, their addresses, and what their occupations were.

  • News Items from the 1896 Tuscola Journal newspaper. Indexed. This book includes everything from marriage and death announcements to other history-altering events such as new businesses, fires, tragedies, society events, etc. Sports & politics not included.

  • News Items from the 1897 Tuscola Journal newspaper. Indexed.

  • 1895 Special Edition of the Saturday Journal newspaper. Indexed. Tells some early history of Tuscola and mentions a number of influential citizens of the time.

  • 1918 Prairie Farmer’s Reliable Directory of Farmers and Breeders, Coles/Douglas County. Alphabetical listing of farmers, members in the household, where farm was located, and the year that farmer became a resident of the county.

  • 1875, 1893, 1914 Douglas County atlases. Show who owned land and where. Not indexed.

  • Directory of School Officers and Teachers of Douglas County. 1908 through 1926, except 1914. Lists the country schools and tells who were the teachers and officers of each. Not indexed.
