The Douglas County Museum has an extensive research/reference library that is open during
regular museum hours. The library holds a significant collection of reference books in three categories:
General History Reference Books, Genealogy/Local History Reference Books, and the Vertical File.
- General History Reference Books
The museum's general history reference books relate to American history only, with the exception of world
war books. The general history books include the Howard Skidmore Military History Book Collection and
books on various subjects of American history such as the Adjutant General’s Reports for the Civil War,
accounts of other wars, the Great Depression, biographies of notable figures in American history, etc. These
books will soon be listed on this website.
- Genealogy/Local History Reference Books
These books include census, plat books, county history books, school annuals, family histories, cemetery
books, etc. The staff of the Douglas County Museum is always pleased and eager to add new materials
that pertain to Douglas County and the counties that surround it to its growing genealogy holdings.
Family genealogies are welcome.
- Vertical Files
The museum's vertical files contain church information, births, deaths, marriages, photographs,
country/in-town schools, tape recorded interviews, and the "People" file. The vertical files also
include files on local history subjects such as agriculture, WDZ, sports, town histories, businesses,
events, etc. Most of the vertical files are located in the Archives Room located adjacent to the main
library in the Douglas County Museum. Visitors are not allowed in the Archives Room, but can research
staff-retrieved material at the main library tables.
